Five ways to use mobile phones to make video for your business

These days, we all carry around HD video capture devices that also happen to make phone calls and run apps.  So, why not use it to make video for your business?  What a great way to capture small, shareable video!

As a video marketing and video production company, we advocate for creating authentic video.  We help our clients figure out when and where to spend their video budget on professional productions and determine when it’s appropriate to make video themselves.

Take a look at 5 things to keep in mind when using your mobile phone to make video for your company.

1. Craft a strategy that makes the best use of the quality of mobile video for things like:
a. Live-streaming select moments from an event or presentation
b. Quick, informal videos that show the human side of your company and the real, live people who work there
c. Capturing something happening “in the moment” that can’t be reproduced or can’t wait for a video crew
Whatever scenario you come up with, keep your overall video marketing strategy in mind.  This will help you determine if it’s the right time to whip out your phone.

2. Use a tripod!  (Especially if you are live-streaming.)
You can’t really expect anyone to hold the phone steady for more than a couple seconds.  Resist the temptation to re-create The Blair Witch-style video and use a tripod.  Even quick intros of your team can do well with the steadying grip of a tripod.

3. Don’t use a tripod!  (To capture in-the-moment excitement!)
Your newest product just came off the printing presses…showing that unboxing moment can be the perfect image to drum up client interest or generate in-house buzz.  Keep these unscripted and authentically-documented moments short.

4. Edit your footage.  (Or, not.)
Edit, make graphics, and produce your mobile phone video as much as is appropriate for the message and tone. Referring back to our first point, your video may be used unedited or your video may be highly produced after the fact.  But, it’s important that the production value aligns with your strategy.

5. Capture client testimonials
When a client gushes about your service or product it may be the perfect time to bring up recording a testimonial.  If you get a yes, a quick mobile video may be just the thing that will save you from penciling in a date to get a formal testimonial in three months…six months..12 months…or never.

If you’re in a “do-or-die” situation, mobile video is a great way to capture the moment.  If done correctly, it can lend an air of authenticity that your viewers will appreciate – even if the video isn’t technically perfect.

PRO TIP!  Since you saved money making video yourself, be sure to get the most out of it by pairing your new video with an online delivery platform.  You can read our thoughts about this here!
